Why clean masonry?
The reasons for cleaning your property are numerous
Improve the appearance of the masonry
Remove non breathable paintwork
Blend original masonry to new work
Slow down damage or decay which is due to deposits on the masonry
Reveal and uncover masonry that is in need of actions such as repair, repointing and protection
Heavily soiled masonry is not just an eye sore it can also be a cause od decay. Vehicles emit Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide. Sulphur Dioxide reacts with the masonry to form calcium sulphate, these crystals trap pollution causing a black crust to form. This causes the pores of the masonry to become clogged and movement of water in and out of the masonry leads to spalling masonry.
Orangic growths contribute to the natural, aged patina that gives masonry it appealing aesthetic on historic structures. However, moss indicates and sustains high moisture levels, which can cause damage and some lichen and bacteria actively cause deterioration. Algae provide nutrients for other biological growth and the discolouration which they cause is often unsightly. Changes in climate, particulary in temperature and in frequency and intensity of rainfall, are resulting in an observed increase in 'greening', indicating more algal colonisation.
Blending old to new brickwork, often new work can be undertaken without the understanding of how to effectively marry the new work to old. Restorative Cleaning can blend new masonry to match the old by either cleaning the existing masonry or by using tints to match. Masonry tinting is used to discolour new or mismatching masonry to blend in using appropriate colours. The tinting forms a strong molecular bond with the face of porous masonry and is vapour permable. The tints are absorbed into the masonry surface to provide a lasting and natuarl finish.
Paint removal
Modern masonry paints are wholly inappropraite for historic buildings and should be carefully removed. Restorative cleaning can remove non breathable paints from brick and stone to allow the building to breathe and dramatically slow the speed of decay to your property. Allowing historic masonry to breathe is vital for the health of your property as moisture can become trapped within the masonry leading to fast and permanent damage to the structure of the building.
